GMES at the 33rd ISRSE Symposium

From 4-8 May 2009, the 33rd International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment (ISRSE) took place in Stresa, Italy. The overall theme of the symposium was the use of Earth Observation systems and airborne techniques for understanding and managing the Earth environment and natural resources.

The symposium included plenary, technical and poster sessions as well as side events and workshops. Additionally, it reviewed a number of international programmes that are established to bring together public policy makers, users, investors, scientists and remote sensing practitioners to exchange their opinions and to assess the progress that is being made towards these objectives.

Amongst other topics, the event has devoted attention to the GMES initiative. Four sessions have been organized, covering a range of aspects related to GMES, for instance:

- GMES current status and perspectives;

- GMES core services (Land, Marine atmosphere, Emergency and Security);

- GMES space component (Sentinel missions, satellite observation capacity and related ground segment) ;

- National, regional and international programmes and applications (Communication in GMES process, GMES services support etc.).

In addition to these sessions, a GMES Global Land Workshop was held that focused on services for land management, including the implementation of the GMES Land Monitoring Core Service and its conditions for sustainability.
